Field Notes

Notes from Kyoto

An exploration of quiet streets, reflected light and the fleeting moments between daily rituals.

I spent two weeks in Kyoto in late spring with one camera, three lenses and no shot list. These are notes from the contact sheets.

Walking before shooting

For the first three days I barely photographed. I walked the same neighbourhoods at dawn and dusk, noting where the light fell and which streets emptied first. By the fourth day the photographs started to come on their own.

Reflections

Glass, water and polished wood are everywhere. Many of my favourite frames are reflections: a lantern in a shop window, a cyclist in a rain puddle, a garden doubled in a sliding door.

The city rewards patience more than speed. Most moments happen twice if you wait.

A selection of these images will be part of an upcoming series about thresholds, alongside work from Porto.
