Field Notes

The Distance Between Things

Observing the physical and emotional gap between individuals in shared spaces.

Ferries, waiting rooms and train platforms: places where strangers share space for a few minutes without speaking. I have been photographing them for three years.

Distance as subject

The subject of these photographs is not the people themselves but the space between them. Two metres can feel intimate on a ferry deck and enormous in an empty waiting room.

Asking permission

I always show people the photograph afterwards and ask whether I can keep it. Most say yes. Those conversations have become part of the project, and some of them appear in the captions.

The series is still open. I expect to keep adding to it for as long as people keep waiting together.
