After Light

Landscape · 2024

Ten days of weather on two islands in the Atlantic.

Meridiano Quarterly commissioned a photo essay about how weather shapes daily life on the Azores. Instead of postcards, the editors wanted the in-between moments: fog lifting, rain arriving, light disappearing.

Challenge

Weather on the islands changes several times a day, which made planning nearly impossible. The essay had to be delivered two weeks after the trip.

Approach

I kept a flexible schedule, checked forecasts every few hours and returned to the same five locations repeatedly, photographing each one in different conditions.

Result

A sixteen-page essay opened the magazine’s spring issue. Two images were later licensed for the islands’ regional tourism campaign.
